First, Klaus, thank you very much for the _EXCELLENT_
distribution!

While the original poster's situation involved a post-
harddisk installation machine, my situation did not, and X
was _not_ already running for me.

In case it's worth looking into, my situation involved an
AGP motherboard (Iwill P4ES, Intel 845E chipset, IIRC) but
with a PCI graphics card (ATI Radeon 7000-7500). I had to
use the '2' boot option, which brought up text mode. I ran
startx, and it didn't work. IIRC, it hung the machine
rather thoroughly, requiring reboot. After doing the
'XFree86 -configure', X would come up, but I seem to recall
there were some font issues.

I ran into a similar situation with a different machine
owned by a relative. His machine was older, not really
enough RAM, a Compaq, maybe a Presario. The symptoms were
similar to mine, though. Redoing the config would let X
come up, but there were font problems.

I'd love to sleuth out the root cause and submit a patch.
Writing a patch is probably beyond my abilities, but I'd be
happy to do some sleuthing, but I would need some guidance
on where to start.

Thanks.
