Maybe you used a different protocol? Did you try to compare scp -1 vs.
scp -2 vs. scp -C (i both cases)? SuSE may just use different default
options.
You should in general avoid SSH protocol version 1, though. Version 2
with no compression is default on Knoppix if you don't specify anything
else by commandline.
