If you do this, you also have to replace the modules on the compressed
CD image to fit the kernel, and recompile cloop.

Probably at the first attempt to load modules from the CD.
Why would you want to use a non-SMP-Kernel? You can just disable SMP
support by saying
knoppix nosmp
at the boot:-Prompt.
