apt-cache search xserver | grep mach
xserver-mach32 - X server for ATI Mach32-based graphics cards
xserver-mach64 - X server for ATI Mach64-based graphics cards
xserver-mach8 - X server for ATI Mach8-based graphics cards

Ok, "except for Mach8 and some old Mach32 chips." means IMHO that
xserver-mach32 and xserver-mach8 are necessary, but xserver-mach64, and thats
what he said is not ...

Please inform yourself :-)

no ... :-)

apt-cache search xserver | grep s3
xserver-s3 - X server for S3 chipset-based graphics cards
xserver-s3v - X server for S3 ViRGE and ViRGE/VX-based graphics cards

All Virge-Chipsets are supported that means xserver-s3v can go, but xserver-s3
needs to be kept.

no, xserver-w32 - X server for Tseng ET4000/W32 and ET6000-based graphics
cards

so ET3000 is not supported in xserver-w32 either ... but it is from svga afair
