Re: [debian-knoppix] Knoppix Persistent_home. What's the use?

The point is, that this 1 file filesystem is automatically found and
mounted under /home/knoppix. So your configuration is persistent without
calling any further scripts. Hence the name "persistent home". Of
course, you can save your stuff under /home/knoppix yourself to a hard
drive and load it back manually - or you can write a script for that
(and call it "persistent home" ;-))

Exactly that was the main motivation for "persistent home"!

That's right, but this path has no end. If you loose the thumbdrive, you
lose all files. If you have it on a hard drive and it crashes, you loose
all files... It's always the same story: if your data critical, you need
backups!

There are several reasons for this:
1) You can store it on FAT partitions (most knoppix-users are
windows-user willing to try linux - they have no ext2/3...) without
loosing file permissions. (btw. i really don't like umsdos!)
2) You only have one file - even under windows. If you use a
thumbdrive, you only have one big file for knoppix, the rest is free
for other stuff. If you want to get rid of it: just delete it - even
   from windows.
3) You can easily search for this file at knoppix boot time.
4) You can optionally encrypt it by using the features of the loop
   device.
5) You only have to backup one simple file (if you want to)

I never meant to force someone to use it! :-)
For the "my floppy is to small for saveconfig" threads in the discussion
boards: I have the impression that most of the people in these threads
are confused by "bootdisk" vs "configdisk" and try to save their
settings to the bootdisk...

Bye,
Matthias
