For auto-power down, look at APM or APIC options in your kernel source. 
You can compile them directly in the kernel, or load them as modules.  I
think you can only use one or the other.  APM always worked for me.

For console text size, I think you're referring to turning on frame
bufferring.  If fb is turned on in the kernel (in 2.4 it's under
character or block devices I think), then in your lilo.conf file (if you
use lilo) you can change the vga=normal to something like vga=791.  This
gives 1024x768 and 16 bit color.  After editing lilo.conf, don't forget
to re-run lilo.  If you use grub, add a 'vga=791' to the end of the line
that passes options to the kernel.

Also, if in lilo you have prompting turned on (by use of the word
'prompt'), you can type in 'knoppix vga=791' (where knoppix is the name
of your kernel) so that you can try out framebufferring without messing
anything up.  Try it once this way, then make it permanent in lilo.
