Isolinux does *not* use fat filesystem. It reads the kernel and initrd
files directly from the CD (iso9660 filesystem). This is called "no
emulation mode" (no image is needed to emulate a floppy).
So isolinux could be used as a replacement with several restrictions:
* Some BIOSes do not support "no emulation mode"
* You cannot easily create a boot floppy for older machines
