No, you need some software, something that loads the module in the kernel. You
can do that manually or automatically.

One of the best things of KNOPPIX is the hardware detection system. It's
composed of different scripts and other stuff that detect the hardware in
your system and load the necessary modules.

Anyway, you can always use /etc/modules to force the load of a module.
