yes you can. either you edit it with vim and save with :w! or you make a copy, remove the one that is there and rename the copy to the old name. you would also need to do the same thing with the smbpasswd wil in the same dir.
or if you have the latest knoppix, just select sambastart in the KNOPPIX menu.
