[debian-knoppix] /dev/dsp busy

Dear All,

I'm a fairly experienced Knoppix user. I've used to teach Gnu/Linux for
the desktop as well as having it in my kit bag almost everywhere I go.

I'm very happy after having installed knoppix to my new Toshiba
Satellite Pro 6100. This is the second laptop I've had Knoppix installed
on. Most everything seemed to work right "out of the box" so to speak,
with the exception of some mucking around I had to do with video settings
to get full-screen output.

The other that I remain stumped on for a permanent solution is sound.

kde plays sound perfectly. Some other applications like xine do also.
Others like xmms and realplayer do not.

I googled around for a bit on the error message I was receiving:

oss_open(): Failed to open audio device (/dev/dsp): Device or resource
busy

and came across the following response from the archives:

http://mailman.linuxtag.org/pipermail/debian-knoppix/2002-July/000630.html

The author suggests killing artsd before starting xmms. It checks out.
Running "killall artsd" lets me play audio through xmms but leaves kde
mute.

Is there a way of resolving this so that I can have audio available to kde
as well as to other applications that talk directly to /dev/dsp?

Ian
