[debian-knoppix] Changed UID - can't set wallpaper?

I edited /etc/passwd to make my UID=500.

After doing chown -R davep.davep /home/davep/ (as root)
and logging back in, I can no longer set a background in KDE.

The control panel lets me change schemes and colors, but the desktop
remains dull grey, even though the control panel preview shows a
wallpaper.

Any ideas ow to fix this?
