If Knoppix is booted from CD, DMA is enabled by default for all harddisks.
On a installed Knoppix, DMA is disabled by default but can be enabled
by editing /etc/init.d/bootmisc.sh and removing the comments where
hdparm is invoked.

I'd rather suspect problems with the ethernet driver like wrong
autosensing of link speed, full/half duplex, etc.
