So that's what it is. I've only recently got into Knoppix, but out of the four
machines in this house, the CD booted up to a blank screen on three of those
machines. The fourth, came up perfect. All same CD burn.
The reason was that only on one machine have I a nice TFT monitor that it
could identify - the other machines have pretty rubbish monitors, goodness
knows what they are, and they had a tendency to simply shut down rather than
display. I had to do command alt plus or minus to get a big chunky 800 * 600
to pan and scan around in.
I had recommended Knoppix to some people I chat with online too (they not into
linux yet - this was their last excuse gone!) and the same happened to one of
them, but they didn't know to use command alt plus/minus. (btw, they were
impressed with Knoppix once I'd got them past that step).
I wonder if there might be a kind of confirmation stepping (in many languages
on the one dialogue box) that simply says 'can you read this?' and if it
doesn't receive an OK in a certain time, it steps down to either a lower safe
freq, or a lower res.
Perhaps. It's just that the first time I put the disk in, I stared at a blank
screen for a few mins expecting something for a considerable time, but didn't
realise it was already there. I only happened to notice the monitor powered
down because I had recently set up X in debian and seen the same happen when
I used an ambitious resolution. My other monitors really are crap though (but
this TFT is delicious).
