Because Knoppix is a mixture of Debian Woody and testing/unstable, the
results of apt-get update/upgrade are quite unpredictable. I am not a
Debian guru, but I think mixing different releases _can_ cause problems.

Perhaps you should take a look at /etc/inittab.
