I haven’t tested that. What I tested is to add vga=791 on the kernel
commandline from within a graphical grub and boot that.
I can try some more combinations later as both grub and kernel got
updates in the meantime.

Unrelated. I just put an old PCMCIA modem into the slot to avoid the
laptop shell breaking, it’s a weak spot on Thinkpads. It also comes
much, MUCH later.
