Package: src:linux
Version: 5.14.12-1
Severity: normal

Hi,

After upgrading from linux-image-5.10.0-8-amd64, my access point stopped working on the 5GHz band. It seems that the EEPROM country is ignored, or misunderstood by the kernel. I have the following at module load:

oct. 15 23:42:21 belette64 kernel: ath: EEPROM regdomain: 0x21
oct. 15 23:42:21 belette64 kernel: ath: EEPROM indicates we should expect a direct regpair map
oct. 15 23:42:21 belette64 kernel: ath: Country alpha2 being used: BB
oct. 15 23:42:21 belette64 kernel: ath: Regpair used: 0x21

However, here is the output of "iw reg get":

global
country 00: DFS-UNSET
    (2402 - 2472 @ 40), (N/A, 20), (N/A)
    (2457 - 2482 @ 20), (N/A, 20), (N/A), AUTO-BW, PASSIVE-SCAN
    (2474 - 2494 @ 20), (N/A, 20), (N/A), NO-OFDM, PASSIVE-SCAN
    (5170 - 5250 @ 80), (N/A, 20), (N/A), AUTO-BW, PASSIVE-SCAN
    (5250 - 5330 @ 80), (N/A, 20), (0 ms), DFS, AUTO-BW, PASSIVE-SCAN
    (5490 - 5730 @ 160), (N/A, 20), (0 ms), DFS, PASSIVE-SCAN
    (5735 - 5835 @ 80), (N/A, 20), (N/A), PASSIVE-SCAN
    (57240 - 63720 @ 2160), (N/A, 0), (N/A)

phy#0
country 99: DFS-UNSET
    (2402 - 2472 @ 40), (N/A, 20), (N/A)
    (5140 - 5360 @ 80), (N/A, 30), (N/A), PASSIVE-SCAN
    (5715 - 5860 @ 80), (N/A, 30), (N/A), PASSIVE-SCAN

For phy0 the country is set to 99, leading to non-IR on all 5GHz bands. Since user defined country can only be more restrictive, and not more permissive, I thus can't have an AP on this band.

In linux-image-5.10.0-8-amd64 I get exactly the same output at module loading, but "iw reg get" reports:

global
country FR: DFS-ETSI
    (2400 - 2483 @ 40), (N/A, 20), (N/A)
    (5150 - 5250 @ 80), (N/A, 23), (N/A), NO-OUTDOOR, AUTO-BW
    (5250 - 5350 @ 80), (N/A, 20), (0 ms), NO-OUTDOOR, DFS, AUTO-BW
    (5470 - 5725 @ 160), (N/A, 26), (0 ms), DFS
    (5725 - 5875 @ 80), (N/A, 13), (N/A)
    (57000 - 66000 @ 2160), (N/A, 40), (N/A)

phy#0
country BB: DFS-FCC
    (2402 - 2482 @ 40), (N/A, 20), (N/A)
    (5170 - 5250 @ 80), (N/A, 23), (N/A), AUTO-BW
    (5250 - 5330 @ 80), (N/A, 23), (0 ms), DFS, AUTO-BW
    (5735 - 5835 @ 80), (N/A, 30), (N/A)

Thus the physical country is set accordingly to the EEPROM.

Switching between both kernels without changing anything else (i.e. /lib/firmware/regulatory.db is exactly the same for both kernels).

I have no clue for now. Feel free to make me test something.

Have a nice day,

Adrien

Hi

This bug was filed for a very old kernel or the bug is old itself
without resolution.

If you can reproduce it with

- the current version in unstable/testing
- the latest kernel from backports

please reopen the bug, see https://www.debian.org/Bugs/server-control
for details.

Regards,
Salvatore
