Package: src:linux Version: 6.9.8-1 Severity: normal Dear Maintainer, * What led up to the situation? Regular upgrade of trixie. * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)? sudo apt full-upgrade * What was the outcome of this action? On boot up the kernel reports errors with initializing amdgpu. It fails after a timeout and boot up takes a very long time. Detailed logs from the systemd journal see below.* What outcome did you expect instead? No error messages from the kernel and normal quick boot up as given with previous kernels.-- Package-specific info: ** Version: Linux version 6.9.8-amd64 (debian-kernel@lists.debian.org) (x86_64-inux-gnu-gcc-13 (Debian 13.3.0-1) 13.3.0, GNU ld (GNU Binutils for Debian) 2.42.50.20240625) #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC Debian 6.9.8-1 (2024-07-07) ** Command line:BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-6.9.8-amd64 root=/dev/mapper/titan.vg-deb13 ro b43.allhwsupport=1product_name: Aspire 5253G product_version: V1.15 chassis_vendor: Acer chassis_version: V1.15 bios_vendor: Acer bios_version: V1.15 board_vendor: Acer board_name: JE50-BZ board_version: Base Board Version ** PCI devices:00:00.0 Host bridge [0600]: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. --- Begin Message ---My further investigations have shown that the reported bug may be a known issue with NCQ (SATA native command queueing) in particular together with older amd hardware. This is given here with the used old laptop with amdgpu.

NCQ is an extension of the Serial ATA protocol allowing hard disk drives to internally optimize the order in which received read and write commands are executed. But why it works all the time until upgrading to kernel 6.9.8-1? With the information from https://ata.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Libata_FAQ#Enabling.2C_disabling_and_checking_NCQ I find that the previous used kernel 6.6.15 does not show the expected information. It shows a queue_depth (cat /sys/block/sda/device/queue_depth) of 32. That is an ambiguous value as noted in the info. I assume that NCQ isn't enabled due to this value and the kernel runs without the reported error messages.NCQ is correct enabled when using kernel 6.9.8-1 and triggers the error messages in conjunction with amdgpu on old hardware. But there is a kernel boot option "libata.force=noncq" to disable it (https://docs.kernel.org/admin-guide/kernel-parameters.html).With the following entry in '/etc/default/grub' boot up will be successful without error messages:GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="libata.force=noncq" IngoAttachment: OpenPGP_signature.asc
