Package: nfs-common
Version: 1:2.6.1-1
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

I have been running mountd without the (Debian's) default
"--manage-gids", since it does not result in behaviour that is working
in my environment.

With nfs-utils 2.6.1, /etc/nfs.conf is introduced. Although there has
been some effort to translate /etc/default/nfs-* to
/etc/nfs.conf.d/local.conf, it does not with default options that are
removed.

I understand that it might be difficult to translate something that
isn't there, but I implore you to consider options.

Maybe the translation needs to be adjusted or maybe there could be a
message explaining that the "--manage-gids" option hasn't been found in
/etc/default/nfs-kernel-server, but it is (again) enabled in
/etc/nfs.conf.

At least describe changes from the current version in bullseye to
bookworm in NEWS.Debian, since it is a big version difference.

And as a side note: I personally think that manage-gids shouldn't be the
default, as it is not with upstream. Looking at the history, there
wasn't much ground to do it in the first place. The original bugreport
#493059 [1] that wished for it, had (also) the request for better
documentation. I think that that would've been the best approach and
still is. I understand that it is not possible to rollback those
changes, but it may be good to ask yourself why something is done the
way it is. (But it's also possible that maybe I have overlooked
something).

Rutger
