It finally finished after more than 4 days of building (the full
Debian binary packages for Debian's i386 architecture with all
modules, etc.):

But the patch with blacklisting my harddisk (SAMSUNG HM160HC) did
NOT help. :-( Still hangs at boot. See the attached screenshot.

Regarding the build time:

dpkg-buildpackage -uc -us -B -j2 232843.23s user 36906.95s system 75%
cpu 99:44:28.97 total

So it took nearly 100 hours to build Debian linux/5.16.18-1 source
package, i.e. a bit more than 4 days.

Also note that this compiled the kernel and all modules provided by
Debian four times, i.e. four flavours (686, 686-pae, rt-686,
rt-686-pae). So it's is not a kernel build specific to this system.

Lessons learned:

Next time I'll try to use ccache and eatmydata.

And I'll use this script as pointed out by Salvatore in private to me
(after I already started the package build and I didn't want to stop
it) as you can restrict compilation to a single flavour and feature
set:

https://kernel-team.pages.debian.net/kernel-handbook/ch-common-tasks.html#s4.2.2

But more likely I'll find out how to cross-compile i386 packages on
amd64, because I was able to build the very same source package (for
amd64 though, which only builds three flavours, amd64, cloud-amd64 and
rt-amd64) on another box in 25 minutes — also without eatmydata,
ccache or any other optimization trick, except that having build with
"-j128" on a RAID1 with fast SSDs below. :-)
