Package: src:linux
Version: 4.4.2-3
Severity: critical
The latest Debian Unstable Linux kernel image
linux-image-4.4.0-1-amd64 causes a spontaneous reboot on
my fifth generation Braswell NUC (model NUC5PPYH with a
quad-core Intel Pentium CPU N3700). The problem doesn't
happen when I boot the older kernel images still installed
in my computer:
linux-image-3.16.0-4-amd64
linux-image-4.3.0-1-amd64
The problem also didn't show up with Linux version 4.2
(which I have already deleted from my computer and is no
longer available via apt-get).
Since the crash takes place early in the boot process,
I cannot cut-and-paste any relevant kernel or system
logs. However I have made a video recording of my system
startup and, after some struggle, managed to upload it to
YouTube under the following link:
https://youtu.be/0Wm55wZ5r8k
The boot crash occurs with Debian Linux kernel image
4.4.0-1-amd64 (package version 4.4.2-3). In the WebM VP9
video sample I uploaded, Linux was booted with the command
options "ro earlyprintk=efi, keep". The options appear to
slow down the boot long enough for the kernel messages
to appear before the computer spontaneously reboots
(i.e. without any further user interaction, e.g. by
pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del). When Linux is booted by the default
"ro quiet", the screen just goes black after Grub loads
Linux, followed by the spontaneous reboot.
Just to note in passing, the last two kernel message lines
before the reboot is related to ACPI, something like:
[#] ACPI: Core revision #
[#] ACPI: 5 ACPI AML tables successfully acquired and loaded
The bug may be related to the apparent EFI bug describedin Debian Bug No. 815173, which has been marked as closed. However, the boot crash occurs even with the latest patchedkernel version used as the basis for closing the bug report.

Hi This bug was filed for a very old kernel or the bug is old itself without resolution. If you can reproduce it with - the current version in unstable/testing - the latest kernel from backports please reopen the bug, see https://www.debian.org/Bugs/server-control for details. Regards, Salvatore
