   * What led up to the situation?

   unattended-upgrades installed new 4.9.0-14 kernel version.
   System did not boot afterwards.
   
   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?
     
   reverting vmlinux, initrd, boot.scr and dtb symbolic links in /boot to old/bak version 4.9.0-13 worked
