Package: src:linux
Version: 3.16.7-ckt9-3~deb8u1
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

Dear Maintainer,

GDM won't start. It displays the screen with the frowning face
        with a useless error message.
I setup lightdm instead and it will start Mate, but it only runs
for a few seconds before everything hangs up. No console access.

   * What led up to the situation?

Upgrade to Debian 8. The Debian 7 series all worked on PowerPC with Radeon r300.
I think it was configured by default to use and old driver, older Gnome, and
no KMS. With Gnome on Debian 8 KMS is required.

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or
     ineffective)?

I tried turning KMS off with nomodeset, but X would not run at all.

   * What was the outcome of this action?

X would not run at all.

   * What outcome did you expect instead?

I thought it would work with nomodeset but then I remembered KMS was required
        now.

Hi

This bug was filed for a very old kernel or the bug is old itself
without resolution.

If you can reproduce it with

- the current version in unstable/testing
- the latest kernel from backports

please reopen the bug, see https://www.debian.org/Bugs/server-control
for details.

Regards,
Salvatore
