after upgrade from linux-image-4.9.0-3-amd64 to linux-image-4.9.0-6-amd64 smartctl stop showing
smart info from external USB3 disk (ST2000LM007-1R8174)

Downgrade to linux-image-4.9.0-3-amd64 fix problem.

This bug was filed for a very old kernel or the bug is old itself
without resolution.

If you can reproduce it with

- the current version in unstable/testing
- the latest kernel from backports
