Package: src:linux
Version: 3.16.3-2
Severity: normal

Dear Maintainer,

The computer is a desktop with KDE and an HP Deskjet F2280 printer /
scanner. It upgraded a while ago to Jessie. I believe that the scanner
was not used for quite some time. While this is a KDE system, GNOME's
simple-scan is used for scanning. The system also has a webcam.

Recently the user noticed that scanning may leave a hung simple-scan
window. Digging further I noticed that even if I try to kill them they
are left zombies (Z) and there are several processes on the system in
D state.

One scenario is starting simple-scan when the scanner is on, turning it
off and then trying to scan. This seems to cause colord-sane to hang:

$ ps aux | grep ' [D]'
colord    4871  0.0  0.4 261804  9292 ?        Dl   12:45   0:00 /usr/lib/colord/colord-sane

Turning the scanner back on (after a very long time) released the process.

However if I start the scanner while simple-scan is running, I get the
following two processes hung:

$ ps aux | grep ' [D]'
lp        7003  0.1  0.9 126484 19236 ?        D    14:25   0:00 /usr/bin/python /usr/lib/cups/backend/hpfax
lp        7004  0.0  0.1  36160  3068 ?        D    14:25   0:00 hp

The trace I get from the kernel for the location of the task is the
same as the one below for colord-sane.

Powering the scanner on again while simple-scan is running may produce
another pair of D state hp and hpfax processes.
