I have a server with 4 nic card,  I installed Debian wheezy/sid on it. After installation all I did was "apt-get update" followed by "apt-get upgrade" followed by "reboot" only to find that the eth0 has become eth5. On subsequent reboots the ethX does not get bumped up by one. This has occurred just three time in about 100 server which I have.  Then I have to manually edit the /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules and then reboot the machine to get the eth5 back to eth0.

# lsb_release -a
    No LSB modules are available.
    Distributor ID: Debian
    Description:    Debian GNU/Linux testing (wheezy)
    Release:        testing
    Codename:       wheezy

Please let me know why does this happen ?  I am not able to consistently repeat this error either.

I am using Debian GNU/Linux testing (wheezy), kernel 3.2.0-3-amd64 #1 SMP Mon Jul 23 02:45:17 UTC 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux

This bug was filed for a very old kernel or the bug is old itself
without resolution.

If you can reproduce it with

- the current version in unstable/testing
- the latest kernel from backports

please reopen the bug, see https://www.debian.org/Bugs/server-control
for details.
