Systems with a RTL8111/8168/8411 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller get a message such as:

[...] r8169 [...] firmware: failed to load rtl_nic/rtl8168f-1.fw (-2)

printed on tty1, unless non-free firmware which allegedly enhances the device is installed. On mine, kern.log contains:

This happens with any i386 image.

This bug was filed for a very old kernel or the bug is old itself
without resolution.

- the current version in unstable/testing
- the latest kernel from backports
