I realized the missing firmware is available at git.kernel.org. Are
these included already in the free package in testing? If so, are there
any plans to backport them (I am running on stable and would rather
wait for that)? Would it harm to fetch just this package from testing
(I presume no)?

The i915 firmware is non-free.

I've done some work toward a new version of firmware-nonfree, but it's
not quite ready yet.
