Bug#961401: linux-image-4.19.0-5-686: communication with scanner on usb bus often fails

Dear Maintainer,

I want to use a canon usb scanner Canoscan 630u. The scanner works with a 
probability of 1 to 50. The conditions whether it will work or not are 
not clear. 

The debug output of the driver module has two failure scenarios:

a) The Scanner and Driver first communicate with each other, e.g. for 
setting scan parameters, but a "write control error" occurs when the 
scanner shall deliver the higher amounts of data during the scan 
itself.

b) The scanner is not at all ready to communicate. The simple remedy 
here is to reset the usb device with the command usbreset:

I tried to get this scanner working with two other machines. A Fujitsu 
and HP Notebook. With both of them the scanner works as expected. I got 
the impression that the problem is due to a kernel module which is 
responsible. 

With my machine, the output of lsusb -t is

With the two notebooks that work, with class root_hub, the driver 
ohci-pci/4p appears. Maybe this driver allows a proper exchange of data 
between the scanner and the machine. But my first attemps to load the 
module by hand with modprobe ohci-pci did not establish communication on 
the usb bus at all
