Dear Maintainer,

I believe I have a bug that has not been reported. There are other bugs involving i915 flickering but I haven't found one that seems to describe these circumstances or that offers a fix that worked in this situation.

The problem is that the screen blanks for approximately a single frame intermittently. When the computer is cold, either first switched on or resuming from suspend the blanking is at a rate (that varies apparently randomly) of approximately 5Hz-10Hz but after a period of approximately a minute or two this settles down to a slower rate, somewhere in the region of 0.5 - 0.1Hz, with occasional bursts of 5-10Hz activity. In all cases the blanking happens in an apparently random and irregular (but bursty) pattern.

   * What led up to the situation?
Installation of Debian Stretch on a new (so no prior working state for comparison) Acer Switch Alpha

   * What exactly did you do (or not do) that was effective (or ineffective)?
        apt-get purge xserver-xorg-video-intel
        Result: no change in behaviour.

        Boot with i915.enable_psr=0
        Result: no change in behaviour.

        Boot with i915.enable_rc6=0
        Result: no change in behaviour.

        Boot with i915.modeset=0
Result: Flickering reduced to horizontal black lines across screen rather than whole-screen blank. The flickering is much less frequent and there is no output in kern.log (with drm.debug=0x1e) when the screen does flicker - I think the flickering in this case may be another (possibly entirely unrelated) issue.

        Boot linux-image-4.10.0-rc6-amd64 from experimental
Result: no change in behaviour (and identical log messages with drm.debug=0x1e).

        Boot linux-image-3.16.0-4-amd64
Result: Same effect as booting 4.9 with i915.modeset=0.

The screen appears to blank more frequently when displaying a mostly white screen rather than a mostly black screen and also after the computer has been off or suspended for a while (i.e. is physically cold).

Please let me know if there is anything I can do to assist in identifying the source of this problem.
