Bug#867776: linux-image-4.9.0-3-amd64: spurious ACPI lid open event on wakeup

Package: src:linux
Version: 4.9.25-1
Severity: normal

Hi.

I think Linux in stretch has started generating a synthetic ACPI lid
open event on wakeup from suspend. This is not desirable in my
situation.

I have a Dell XPS-13 DE. It has a hardware infelicity, in that it can
sometimes wake from suspend due to being knocked even when the lid
remains closed.

I don't know what the triggering physical event is (ie, which sensor
is responsible). However (with earlier stretch kernels, from 4th May
2016, for example) monitoring ACPI events etc. shows a lid close
event, suspend, and then a wakeup, but no lid open event.

So I wrote some small scripts which monitor the lid open/close events,
and arrange that if the computer wakes up, but there is no lid open
event, it goes back to sleep again.

Some time between then and now, something has changed. Now, I get lid
open events even when the lid remains closed.

I can reproduce this problem at will with the following recipe:

 * Make a terminal window with a huge font
 * In it as root run acpi_listen | ts
 * Close the lid but onto a paper notebook or other object (~15mm) so
that you can still see inside. (You can use a finger, but using a
solid object avoids the possibility that the lid sensor is
   being triggered accidentally.)
 * Observe that the screen goes blank and the power led goes off.
Ie the lid close sensor has been triggered correctly.
 * While still holding the lid shut, click the clickpad.
 * Observe that the power led comes on again, and that the terminal
window (which you are looking at at a weird angle) says
   something like this:
    zealot:~> really acpi_listen | ts
    Jul 09 11:51:36 button/lid LID close
    Jul 09 11:51:47 button/lid LID open
    Jul 09 11:51:47 battery PNP0C0A:00 00000081 00000001
    Jul 09 11:51:47 battery PNP0C0A:00 00000080 00000001

But of course the lid was and remains closed. Something has generated
a lid open event. This is even though the lid sensor was not
triggered (we can be sure of this because the lid is held at a
constant angle by the trapped object).

The firmware on my laptop has not been upgraded. The most likely
culprit seems to be the kernel. Perhaps the kernel is trying to be
"helpful"; eg, to work around some other laptops which, when you open
the lid, wake up without sending a lid open event.

But I need the previous behaviour, or my laptop can wake up in a bag.

Thanks,
Ian.
