I believe I was also seeing this, using KDE and tried changing
compositing from opengl to xrender didn't seem to help. The machine also
has two monitors and I was seeing one of the monitors blanking
frequently. It seemed to happen more when switching windows. X was using
vesa driver for 2d and the intel driver for 3d. I only saw a freeze when
I started a second X instance to try and troubleshoot problems. It
seemed to be only related to keyboard/video/mouse as I was able to ssh
into the host from another computer and work normally and the power
button still initiated a shutdown. I installed the backports kernel and
don't have the problem and it only occurred after rebooting into 4.9.65-3
from an upgrade on the 11th December.
