Bug#843649: Unable to boot Jessie installed on usb drive on major of x86 archs computers

Source: linux
Severity: important

Hi, with Jessie amd64 I found a strange and important problem, Jessie (persistent install, same as internal disk one) on usb drive don't boot on major of pc(desktop), notebook and servers x86. From a fast search I don't found solution or workaround for this.

I used Lenny, Squeeze and Wheezy for years on many different servers for maintenance/install operations without problem but now with Jessie I'm unable to boot on many servers, in particular the recent ones (4-5 years old or less).

I did many tests, the first 1 year ago or more with debian 8.1 and latest recently with 8.6, in both I used for install the netinst amd64 image taken from debian official site.

If I install it on pc/server where boot correctly install it successfull but don't boot trying to boot on pc/servers where have the problem, it arrive to busybox of initramfs and usb drive is not visible (with cat /proc/partitions). If I try to install it on pc where don't boot do the install except grub that "fails" without return error and fails to boot also on pc where jessie can boot correctly.

I tried also kernel from backports up to 4.7 with same result.

I tried for test to install on usb drive ubuntu server (minimal) 16.04.1 and boot correctly also where Jessie fails. I tried 2 Jessie kernel rebuild some CONFIG_USB... changes to make it similar to the ubuntu kernel without solves the problem. I suppose there is something missed or wrong about drivers needed/loaded.

I think this is an important problem even if I suppose debian install on usb drive on x86 archs is not widely used.

Can someone solve this problem please?

Thanks for any reply and sorry for my bad english.
