Hello Ben,
thanks for following up on this bug report.

Even though I am not the original submitter, I was bitten by the same
bug, as I said. Hence, I would like to give version 4.8.5-1 a try.

However, I must confess that I am not sure I understand which
linux-image package I should install. I know this sounds a bit daft,
but please let me explain...

What I currently have on the i386 machine under consideration is:

  $ aptitude search linux-image-
  i A linux-image-4.6.0-1-686         - Linux 4.6 for older PCs

  v   linux-image-4.8.0-1-686-pae     -

  p   linux-image-4.8.0-1-686-unsigne - Linux 4.8 for older PCs
  v   linux-image-4.8.0-1-rt-686-pae  -
  p   linux-image-4.8.0-1-rt-686-pae- - Linux 4.8 for modern PCs, PREEMPT_RT
  p linux-image-586 - Linux for older PCs (dummy package)
  i   linux-image-686                 - Linux for older PCs (meta-package)
  p   linux-image-686-pae             - Linux for modern PCs (meta-package)
  p   linux-image-grsec-686-pae       - Linux image meta-package, grsec featureset
  p   linux-image-grsec-i386          - Linux image meta-package, grsec featureset

I expected to find a linux-image-4.8.0-1-686 package in unstable, but
it seems to be only present as a virtual package, provided by
linux-image-4.8.0-1-686-unsigned:

  $ aptitude -s install linux-image-4.8.0-1-686
  Note: selecting "linux-image-4.8.0-1-686-unsigned" instead of the virtual package "linux-image-4.8.0-1-686"
  The following NEW packages will be installed:
    linux-image-4.8.0-1-686-unsigned
  0 packages upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
  Need to get 36.4 MB of archives. After unpacking 136 MB will be used.
  Would download/install/remove packages.

I also expected to find a new version of the meta-package
linux-image-686 in unstable, depending on the new image package
linux-image-4.8.0-1-686, but instead I see that the unstable
version is still identical to the testing one:

  $ apt-cache policy linux-image-686
  linux-image-686:
    Installed: 4.7+75
    Candidate: 4.7+75
    Version table:
   *** 4.7+75 800
          800 http://httpredir.debian.org/debian testing/main i386 Packages
          500 http://httpredir.debian.org/debian unstable/main i386 Packages
          100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Is all this a temporary situation due to the signing process and/or
the auto-linux-signed transition?

Which package should I give a try, anyway?

When will the meta-package be updated to depend on the new 4.8.x linux
image package?

Please let me know.
Thanks for your time and patience!
