Subject: linux-image-2.6.32-5-amd64: boot failure with acpi enabled

Running Debian squeeze, recently updated, on an Acer Aspire 5735Z
laptop.

By default, ACPI is enabled and booting is unreliable. Often (at least
half the
time, maybe more) after a shutdown I am unable to boot except by
removing
external power and the battery for a few seconds, then restoring power,
after
which the system boots. Without doing this, the power light comes on on
the
power switch and the disk activity light comes on briefly, the fan spins
up,
but then after a few seconds the lights go out and the fan stops (or at
least
slows down) for a few seconds. This cycle repeats. If I press the power
button
again, the lights go out and the fan stops and the system stays this
way, but
when I press the power button again, the same problem occurs. The BIOS
display
never appears - the screen remains blank. There are no error messages or
anything else displayed.

I searched for relevant posts but found nothing specific. I tried adding
boot
options acpi_osi='Linux' and acpi='force', but neither made any
difference.

If I add the boot option acpi='off', then the system boots reliably.

I may not be reporting this against the appropriate package. This was
very much
a guess. uname -a reports:

Debian 6.0 Long Term Support is now ending, and the 'linux-2.6' source
package will no longer be updated.  This bug is being closed on the
assumption that it does not affect the kernel versions in newer Debian
releases.

If you can still reproduce this bug in a newer release, please reopen
the bug report and reassign it to 'src:linux' and the affected version
of the package.  You can find the package version for the running
kernel by running:

    uname -v

or the versions of all installed kernel packages by running:

    dpkg -l 'linux-image-[34]*' | grep ^.i

and looking at the third column.

I apologise that we weren't able to provide a specific resolution for
this bug.
