Package: linux-2.6
Version: 2.6.32-21
Severity: important

Hi,

After several hours or days of running aircrack-ng (in this instance only 90 minutes) on a USB rtl8187 wlan interface, a strange kind of kernel lockup happens. Many processes hang, I think when they attempt some kind of disk I/O. I remember having a similar issue in 2.6.26 kernels, too, on the same system.

Other symptoms include:

 * local keyboard numlock won't toggle any more
 * local console won't come out of standby blank mode
* Sys-RQ key triggers actions, but I don't think sync or remount completed:

[12520.844715] Emergency Sync
[12524.975946] Emergency Sync
[12527.911438] Emergency Sync
[12531.661771] Emergency Remount R/O
[12537.376854] Emergency Sync

I wouldn't expect a sync to take more than 2-5 seconds on this system. Filesystems were not clean on reboot, so fsck.reiserfs was run and it replayed journal transactions. Please upgrade the Severity if that seems to justify it. Confusingly though, the messages above were in kern.log after reboot, so they were written to disk, at least. /var/log has its own local partition, but still on the same MD device and disks as everything else.

Also:

* network interface still responds to ping; NAT, iptables and bridges all working normally * SSH on the host responds with the OpenSSH greeting, but login hangs after authentication, without showing the motd or shell * OpenVZ VE's on the machine still continue to serve web, SMB shares, and mail just fine
 * SSH into a VE displays the motd, but locks up before the shell prompt
* serial login prompt (getty) stopped responding (won't even echo back characters) * serial console (via onboard BMC) still shows kernel messages as they're being generated, including this (repeating every 2 minutes):

[ 9001.613530] INFO: task events/3:18 blocked for more than 120 seconds.

I haven't been able to figure out yet what the events/3:18 kernel process is. There were no other errors in dmesg leading up to this.

Physically unplugging the device didn't help anything to 'un-freeze'. This is the offending USB device:

Version: 3.4.1-1~experimental.1+rm

Debian 6.0 Long Term Support has now ended, and the 'linux-2.6' source
package will no longer be updated. This bug is being closed on the
assumption that it does not affect the kernel versions in newer Debian
releases.

If you can still reproduce this bug in a newer release, please reopen
the bug report and reassign it to 'src:linux' and the affected version
of the package. You can find the package version for the running
kernel by running:

    uname -v

or the versions of all installed kernel packages by running:

    dpkg -l 'linux-image-[34]*' | grep ^.i

and looking at the third column.

I apologise that we weren't able to provide a specific resolution for
this bug.

Ben.
