Another test shows that there is no need to disable
CC_STACKPROTECTOR_STRONG.  It appears to have been a red-herring on the way
to determining the real solution (if only a work around for now)

~/linux-4.8.6$ grep CC_STACKPROTECTOR_STRONG .config
CONFIG_CC_STACKPROTECTOR_STRONG=y

Using gcc-6 6.2.0-9 with kernel 4.8.6.
