Could you try what offb does if you boot with the kernel option:
video=1680x1050-32

I just wonder if that makes bterm work with right colors.

Of course it might not like it if it doesn't know how to change the mode
on an "Unknown" type of device.

Unfortunately /proc/iomem on powerpc is apparently totally useless.
