How do you know the kernel doesn't detect the touchpad?
Please send the output of: cat /sys/class/input/input*/name

xserver-xorg-input-synaptics is obsolete, and *might* not work
correctly with current desktop software.  Did you test with xserver-
xorg-input-libinput installed and -synaptics removed?
