Package: src:linux
Version: 4.4.6-1
Severity: normal

On my new Dell XPS-13 Developer Edition, running stretch (installed
from Stretch Alpha 5), the screen backlight is not detected.

/sys/class/backlight is empty.

The system came with an OEM install of Ubuntu trusty, which has
working backlight controls and has this in /sys/class/backlight:
 lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Apr 24 13:18 intel_backlight ->
 ../../devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:02.0/drm/card0/card0-eDP-1/intel_backlight
echoing things into the appropriate file there changes the brightness
as expected, on trusty.

That's with linux-image-3.19.0-58-generic from trusty,
FYI Ubuntu's apt-get source informs me:
Picking 'linux-lts-vivid' as source package instead of 'linux-image-3.19.0-58-generic'
NOTICE: 'linux-lts-vivid' packaging is maintained in the 'Git' version control system at:
  http://kernel.ubuntu.com/git-repos/ubuntu/ubuntu-trusty.git

FYI, other things, which may or may not be relevant:

 * I have to boot with `nomodeset' or the screen goes blank during
boot. The X server works just fine.

 * Resume from suspend does not work. It's hard to tell exactly, but
I have at leaast once had a resume which was successful apart from
the fact that the display was black: I had suspended from a text
console, on which I was logged in, and on resume I was able to
type commands which were then executed.

 * Hibernation seems to sometimes not work; again, black screen.

 * At least once, after a failed resume, I saw (in very strong
sunlight) a very faint pattern on the screen, which might have been
due to the screen displaying the expected picture but without the
   backlight.

 * Cursory inspection of logs recorded on-disk after a failed resume
seems to suggest that the resume was mostly successful from the
point of view of the OS, even though the screen did not show
   anything.

 * The provided Ubuntu install doesn't seem to work entirely properly.
I haven't bothered debugging the issues with it, except to the
extent needed to use the Ubuntu install as a comparator for
   hardware support problems etc.

 * The laptop also has a keyboard backlight. This seems to be handled
entirely by a peripheral controller or something; the key (FN+F10)
for adjusting its brightness shows up in acpi_listen as an unknown
ACPI event, but works in all contexts (including the BIOS, grub,
and the stretch kernel). (I'm mostly using acpi-support for magic
   key handling.)

 * I'm using a customised version of xf86-input-mtrack to get the
trackpad to behave the way I want it to. I don't think this is
   relevant.

 * I'm using sysvinit as pid 1 rather than systemd. My display
manager is lightdm. My login session does use systemd-logind.

I suspect that the backlight problem is relevant to (perhaps even the
only cause of) the suspend failures.

I'm happy to provide more information, carry out experiments, etc.
These issues are a high priority for me so you should find me
responsive :-).

Thanks,
Ian.

I have since discovered that:

 * On this machine the i915 driver is responsible for the backlight
   control too.

 * The i915 driver registers the backlight device in the modesetting
   path (!)

 * Although "nomodeset" was required to get the kernel from stretch
Alpha 5 to not produce a black screen shortly after booting into
the installed system, linux-image-4.4.0-1-amd64 4.4.6-1 works fine
without "nomodeset" (and seems to set the mode during boot as
expected). There seems little point in reporting any bug against
the stretch alpha 5 kernel as I'm sure it will be updated in due
   course.

 * Booting linux-image-4.4.0-1-amd64 4.4.6-1 without "nomodeset"
     - produces /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight
        and working backlight control buttons
     - seems to suspend and resume fine (4 trials so far)

I will close this bug. Sorry for the noise.

Ian.
