Package: src:linux
Version: 4.4.2-3
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

I have an external screen plugged into the VGA socket of my laptop.
I rebooted to use the newly installed 4.4 Linux image.
GDM still works, I can log in, but then while the X session starts,
the system freezes : the mouse pointer is stuck.
Pressing NumLock does does not update its LED.

Possible workarounds : either
 - do not attempt to start an X session, press Ctrl+Alt+F1 to stay in textmode
 - or unplug the external VGA screen and only use the laptop screen
 - or use linux-image-4.3.0-1-amd64

Starting the X session THEN pluging in the external screen works for a few
seconds, then this same bug occurs again.

This issue is not specific to Gnome, I tried with Gnome Classic and XFCE and
got the very same behaviour. Gnome on Wayland seems usable for a few seconds,
one can open a few windows, then the screens blink a few times, then the linux
kernel crashes.

When the screens blink, sometimes the system seems to be trying buggy video
modes.
