My /var/log/messages only had messages for today. So I rebooted into my
new
kernel 4.4.0-1-amd64 with the bug and recreated the bug. My output from
/var/log/messages is as follows from "Oops" to "end trace"

This doesn't "break the whole system", since you were able to recover
simply by rebooting.

I think this is the same as bug #820176.  Is the crash recorded in
/var/log/messages (look for "BUG" or "Oops")?  If so, please copy the
lines from there down to "---[ end trace ............ ]---"
