After looking at this problem more closely, this is a hardware bug
with this machine (actually the screen and its USB hub). The fact
that this bug got triggered just a few days ago is just a complete
coincidence.
I'm starting to wonder whether this is a hardware bug as well. I'll
try to downgrade even more packages.
