As you can see, this happened many times over a period of an hour and
a half. During this time, the system was still working on some level
(the apache log shows a steady stream of requests), but I have no idea
if anything unusual was going on. At 03:01:06, the apache log stops.
At 03:10:40, the system log abruptly cuts off in the middle of an
error message.
When I came to look at the machine the next day, it was *mostly*
frozen - neither apache, nor ssh, nor any other network services were
responding; however, it still responded to pings, and nmap still
reported various ports as open. The console was blank and did not
respond to CapsLock, NumLock, nor Ctrl+Alt+Delete.
I have no idea how to debug this. Obviously a web search turns up
huge numbers of results for "BUG: soft lockup" (including other Debian
bugs), but I have no idea if any of them are relevant to my case, nor
have I found any information about how to narrow down the problem.
Please tell me if there is anything I can do to make it possible to
figure out what is going on if this happens in the future.
