Bug#795555: linux-image-3.16.0-4-686-pae: cannot find /sbin/init (though probably can't find filesystem?)

Package: linux-image-3.16.0-4-686-pae
Version: 3.16.7-ckt11-1+deb8u3
Severity: important

Dear Maintainer,

After upgrading from 3.10 to 3.16 my system fails to boot - it says it couldn't find /sbin/init and then dumps me into a "(initramfs)" prompt.

I poked around and the md arrays are assembled, but the LVM volumes are not activated. I was able to activate them, so all the necessary tools appear to be there, so it's unclear what goes wrong.

I tried both the 586 and 686-pae variants (this is on an old PII).

Reverting back to 3.10 enables me to boot.
