Even if there is a hardware problem with a device, shouldn't the
kernel handle it (e.g. something like a timeout + an error), at
least to get some useful report about the problem?

Except the processes that tried to accede to the video controller
(and froze by doing that), the system was fine: I could still work
with the machine via SSH and didn't notice any other problem.
