Bug#763667: X Server does not start up with 3.16 / additional info
Hi!
As mentioned in the bug report 763667, I experience the same here on my
notebook, however, ONLY with an external monitor attached. Up to 3.14
things worked flawlessly in this setup, no changes in hardware or
connections or...
In 3.16, system boot up works fine till I get the final login message on
the console, then the first letter is deleted and nothing happens
anymore, ie. slim is not starting up. Ctrl-Alt-Del allows initiating a
clean reboot, but I can not get any console or login to track the issue
from this point onward. Only Ctrl-Alt-Del. :(
X is using nouveau drivers for an nvidia mobile (ThinkPad T410, extenral
Monitor via DVI). From Xorg.0.log.old I see, when the external display
is connected an normal startup till:
[...]
[ 26.398] (II) modesetting: Driver for Modesetting Kernel Drivers: kms
[ 26.398] (II) FBDEV: driver for framebuffer: fbdev
[ 26.398] (II) VESA: driver for VESA chipsets: vesa
[ 26.398] (--) using VT number 2
Here it stops dead. diffing .old with current a log from working system
shows no difference (except timestamping), thus doesn't give me a clue.
Using only the internal display I get working X even with 3.16 lines of
kernel and the normal start up continues from the above lines:

[ 26.699] (WW) Falling back to old probe method for modesetting

Looks like drm init doesn't succeed.
