Bug#754067: linux-image-3.15-trunk-amd64: vm dirty ratio is huge

Hello,

the Debian kernels are misconfigured and hang/oom-kill/crash when
doing heavy disk I/O like copying disk images, running several VMs, etc.

Reportedly this is not the upstream configuration so the problem is with
the debian package.

This problem is probably not present in the stable kernel where the
Linux VM sybsystem can handle excessive values of dirty ratio and update to VM
subsystem was introduced sometime around kernel version 3.4~3.6.

default broken setup:

Unfortunately, optimal value of dirty ratio varies per system.

Perhaps it should be set in fixed memory amount rather than percent.

An alternative is to apply a patch to the kernel to flush dirty blocks
on memory shortage. To the best of my knowledge this was never applied
upstream and upstream is not working on any fix.
