After using apt-get to install the 3.10-3-amd64 kernel, the problem was noticed by clients connected to the system's OpenVPN server. Large directory listings to a session's terminal were very slow and often caused the session to hang. Older versions of the Linux kernel (3.2.0-4 and 2.6.32-5) have no such problem. Here's a summary of how proxy arp is used by the OpenVPN server: * The system runs two instances of the OpenVPN server. One for TCP clients and the other for UDP clients connecting to port 443 of the system's external interface. * The system's internal eth0 interface [15.0.48.190] is on HP's 15.0.48.0/21 subnet. Traffic to and from the system's IP addresses on the physical NICs are unaffected. * Sending ICMP echo requests of various sizes showed no packet loss involving a proxy-arp'ed tunnel address. * Sending a burst of 100 DNS queries using UDP also showed no problem. The queries were for "netbsd.org. ANY +dnssec" so that the size of the replies would be large (~1400 bytes). A packet capture showed the elapsed time to be about 1 second. * A burst of 100 queries using TCP, however, took 21 seconds to complete. A packet capture showed a large number of retransmitted and reassembled packets. * The TCP packet loss was the worst when the OpenVPN client was communicating with a host on the same subnet as the OpenVPN server (15.0.48.0/21).
