Bug#771379: linux-image-3.16-0.bpo.3-amd64: backport kernels not booting when root file system is on an LVM volume

Package: src:linux
Version: 3.16.5-1~bpo70+1
Severity: important

+ do an installation that has the root file system on an LVM volume

+ once finished, install the backports kernel
this removes initramfs-tools because the backports kernel uses
    dracut

+ make sure the backports kernel is actually installed

+ reboot to the backports kernel

Booting gets stuck shortly after the logical volumes have been
detected. I can plug in or remove USB devices and messages will show
up on the console about the USB devices, so the machine isn't entirely
dead. It's also possible to reboot with Ctrl+Alt+Del.

However, booting remains stuck and doesn't proceed. Without LVM
involved, and with VMs within LVs, the backports kernel boots and runs
just fine.

I suspect that there might be some modules omitted from the initramfs
which are required to boot when the root fs is on a logical volume
when the iniramfs image is created with dracut.

On a side note: The Debian installer rescue mode needs a way to set
up a pppoe connection. Rescueing was a major pita because one of the
VMs handles the internet connection.

And what if you need to start VMs when you're in rescue mode?
