I tried various debug options along the lines of 
https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/boot_debugging. The only effect 
"debug" had was that the libgcrypt message and the prompt 5 minutes 
later didn't show but the kernel still waited for me to hit RETURN. 
Nothing meaningful was to be seen on the console or in dmesg or kern.log.
